Euro 2024: Serbia scores late to draw with Slovenia 1-1
Substitute Luka Jovic scored a dramatic late equalizer to earn Serbia a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in their opening Euro 2024 match on Saturday.
The result leaves both teams with one point after the first round of matches in Group B, with Spain and Ukraine to face off later on Saturday. Slovenia took the lead in the 26th minute through a long-range strike from Benjamin Sesko, but Serbia hit back in the 90th minute when Jovic headed in a cross from Dusan Tadic. It was a deserved point for Serbia, who had the better of the chances throughout the game. They hit the woodwork twice, through Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Nemanja Radonjic, and also had a goal ruled out for offside. Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a number of fine saves to keep his team in the game, but he was eventually beaten by Jovic's late header. The draw means that both teams are still in contention to qualify for the knockout stages. Serbia will face Ukraine in their next match, while Slovenia will take on Spain.
