Ukraine: A History of Independence Declarations

Early Independence Declarations

In the tumultuous period between 1917 and 1919, Ukraine saw the emergence of several independent republics, including the Makhnovshchina, the Ukrainian People's Republic, the Ukrainian State, and the West Ukrainian People's Republic.

In 1991, Crimea gained autonomous republic status, and Crimeans narrowly supported Ukrainian independence.

Ukrainian War of Independence

Shortly after the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in 1917, Ukraine declared independence and engaged in the Ukrainian War of Independence (also known as the Ukrainian-Soviet War), which lasted from 1917 to 1921.

The war was part of the broader Russian Civil War and resulted in Ukraine's independence.
