Matthew Boyd to undergo season-ending UCL surgery
Detroit Tigers pitcher to miss remainder of 2023 campaign
Boyd has been dealing with left elbow pain for several weeks
The Detroit Tigers announced on Tuesday that pitcher Matthew Boyd will undergo season-ending UCL surgery. Boyd has been dealing with left elbow pain for several weeks and has been on the injured list since June 22.
The surgery, which is scheduled for Wednesday, will repair a torn UCL in Boyd's elbow. The recovery time for UCL surgery is typically 12-18 months, so it is likely that Boyd will miss the entire 2023 season.
Boyd's injury is a major blow to the Tigers, who are already struggling to stay in contention in the AL Central. Boyd was one of the team's most reliable starters in 2021, going 8-6 with a 3.89 ERA in 27 starts.
The Tigers will now have to rely on their other starters, including Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, and Matt Manning, to step up in Boyd's absence. The team could also look to acquire a starting pitcher via trade before the August 2 trade deadline.
