Aquinas Football Team Falls As Jserra Takes Advantage Of Opportunities

Aquinas Football Team's Season Ends in Loss to JSerra Catholic

Opportunities Missed Cost Aquinas

The Aquinas High School football team's season came to an end Friday night with a 28-21 loss to JSerra Catholic High School in the CIF-SS Division 2 semifinals.

The Falcons (10-3) had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes, but a pass from quarterback Tyler Vander Waal was intercepted by JSerra's Jake Calcagno.

The Lions (12-1) took advantage of several Aquinas mistakes, including a fumble and two interceptions, to build a 21-7 lead in the first half.

Aquinas Rallies in Second Half

The Falcons rallied in the second half, scoring two touchdowns to cut the lead to 21-14.

Aquinas had a chance to tie the game again in the fourth quarter, but a field goal attempt was blocked.

JSerra then added a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Missed Opportunities Haunt Falcons

The loss was a disappointing end to a season that saw Aquinas win its first CIF-SS title since 2013.

The Falcons will now look to regroup and prepare for next season.

Key Stats

  • JSerra Catholic 28, Aquinas 21
  • Aquinas had 211 yards of total offense, while JSerra had 321.
  • Aquinas turned the ball over three times, while JSerra had no turnovers.

Quotable

"We made too many mistakes tonight," Aquinas coach Ray Rodriguez said. "We didn't play our best game, and JSerra took advantage of our mistakes."

Looking Ahead

The Aquinas football team will now look to regroup and prepare for next season.

The Falcons will have a lot of talent returning, including Vander Waal, who passed for over 2,000 yards this season.

Aquinas will also need to find a way to replace several key players who are graduating, including running back Darius Curry and linebacker Mason Graham.
